Police forces around the world use K-9’s to track criminals, sniff out explosives and illegal drugs, search buildings, and perform other jobs that dogs can do better than people. Their sense of smell (50 times more powerful than humans’) and speed on foot are of benefit to officers, and often times dogs’ very presence can inhibit suspects from fleeing or prevent physical confrontations. Thanks to a $12,000 donation from the Chehalis Foundation in 2012, one K-9 named Reign joined the Chehalis Police Department in 2013 after 400 hours of training. He is now a partner in the K-9 Unit with Officer Ayres.
