About the Project

Penny Playground underwent a comprehensive renovation to transform it into a modern, inclusive, and accessible play area for children of all abilities. This community-driven project replaced the outdated playground with state-of-the-art facilities designed to cater to diverse needs.

Project Benefits

Key features of the renovated playground include:​

  • Inclusive Design: Wheelchair-accessible equipment, ramps, and swings with molded bucket seats to accommodate children with mobility challenges.​
  • All-Weather Surface: Replacement of the old pea gravel with an all-weather play surface to prevent water accumulation and enhance safety.​
  • Enhanced Safety Measures: Installation of new perimeter fencing, improved visibility through an elevated hillside, and LED lighting to ensure a secure environment.​
  • Diverse Play Structures: Inclusion of tall towers, climbing elements, ziplines, slides, and shaded areas, providing a variety of activities for children to enjoy.

Investment Amount

The total investment for the renovation was approximately $1.3 million, sourced from various contributors, including government departments within Washington State and Lewis County, local service groups such as the Kiwanis and Rotary International, businesses, and residents. Notably, students from several elementary schools in Chehalis collectively raised $12,000, with Lintott Elementary School contributing over $8,000.

Fundraising Status

The project was fully funded and successfully completed, with the playground reopening to the public in May 2021.
