History:
William F. West was a respected civic leader and business owner in Chehalis. In 1947, he and his wife Blanche donated 18 acres of land for the future site of W.F. West High School. Believing deeply in the power of education, the couple amended their estate plan in 1956 to establish a permanent scholarship trust.
John B. Coffman, also a local business owner, and his wife Zylpha created a scholarship in 1972 in memory of their son, John Freeman Coffman, who died in a car accident shortly after graduating from W.F. West High School. Both families had a strong commitment to supporting local youth in achieving their educational goals.
Endowment Purpose:
The West and Coffman Scholarship Fund exists to provide financial assistance to graduates of W.F. West High School who demonstrate strong academic potential but may lack the means to afford college. The fund’s mission is to open doors for higher education and to foster a culture of giving back. Contributions to this endowment help increase the number of students who can benefit each year.
