History:
Rodney Giske, known for his deep commitment to education and sports, became a beloved member of the Bearcat community when he joined in 1952. As head football coach and history teacher, Rod shaped the lives of many students during his tenure. He and his wife, Mary Beth, raised four children in Chehalis, each of whom graduated from W. F. West. Rod’s impact extended far beyond the football field—he was a man known for his big heart, hospitality, and generous spirit, often guiding students to become their best selves. His legacy of inspiration lives on even after his passing in 2014 at the age of 92.
Rod’s sports career began early; at Washington State College, he captained his team in his senior year, was the J.F. Bohler Inspirational Player, and was named an All-American by the Associated Press in 1946. He was also a standout at Stadium High School in Tacoma, where he earned All-Cross State League honors and was named team captain and inspirational award winner. His influence was felt not only on the field but also in his ability to inspire his colleagues to become better educators. Rod believed that coaching was a serious responsibility, and he cared deeply about each player he mentored.
