Gene Verley Scholarship

Gene and Shirlie Verley

History:

Gene and Shirlie Verley began their teaching careers in the Bay Area of California before moving to Washington State. Gene earned his Master’s degree in Business Education in 1964 and, with Shirlie, decided to settle in Chehalis for the opportunities it offered their careers and family. Gene taught business courses at W.F. West High School from 1964 to 1988 and served as the department chair for much of that time. He also coached Bearcat baseball for five years and was involved in various school activities, including serving as the ASB Advisor. Shirlie was head of the English department at W.F. West from 1967 to 1989, and their three children are proud graduates of W.F. West.

Gene’s career and dedication to education left a lasting impact on his students, colleagues, and family. This scholarship was established to honor Gene for the positive influence he had on his family’s life and the community, as well as to support students pursuing a business degree.
