History:
Doris Wiley Hamilton White, a longtime resident of Chehalis, was born on November 24, 1920, in Seattle and moved to Chehalis as a child. She graduated from Chehalis High School in 1938. Doris had a fulfilling life, marrying Norman Hamilton in 1941, with whom she enjoyed 45 years of marriage before his passing in 1986.
Doris worked at First Federal Savings and Loan of Chehalis (later known as Evergreen Savings) from 1954 until her retirement in 1984, rising to the position of vice president and executive secretary. She married Keith White in 1988, and together they enjoyed traveling and spending time with loved ones until Keith passed away in 2002.
Doris was known for her strong organizational skills, independence, and deep commitment to her community. She supported numerous causes, including her church, nonprofit organizations, and other local initiatives. Doris was also a mentor to colleagues, customers, and loved ones, leading by example in both her banking career and personal life.
Doris directed part of her estate to support W. F. West High School graduates seeking to further their education, establishing a scholarship in her name through the Chehalis Foundation.
Scholarship Purpose:
To honor Doris Wiley Hamilton White’s legacy by providing financial support to W. F. West High School graduates pursuing further education, continuing Doris’ tradition of community support and dedication to helping others succeed.
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to W. F. West High School graduates
- Must demonstrate financial need and a desire to further their education
- Must have shown strong community involvement or leadership in high school
Selection Considerations
The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:
- Academic achievement and potential for success in higher education
- Community involvement and service
- Leadership qualities demonstrated in school or extracurricular activities
