MATLAB
By providing early exposure to MATLAB, this program equips students with critical computational and programming skills, preparing them for further studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
About the Project
MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) is a powerful tool for numerical computation and visualization, widely used in engineering, science, and research. W.F. West High School is among the few, if not the only, high schools in the Northwest offering access to MATLAB. The Mathematical Modeling class teaches students to build computational models using core programming concepts and create Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to visualize and explore data. Some students have incorporated MATLAB into their Advanced Physics projects, gaining experience with essential programming techniques such as arrays, loops, functions, and data structures.
Project Benefits
- Hands-on experience with MATLAB, a leading tool in STEM fields
- Introduction to programming concepts such as arrays, loops, and functions
- Development of computational models with graphical user interfaces
- Integration of MATLAB into Advanced Physics projects
- Encouragement for students to pursue computer science and engineering careers
Results:
- MATLAB students have been inspired to study computer science after high school
- Enhanced STEM curriculum at W.F. West High School
