Ingwersen STEM Endowment

Ray & Mary Ingwersen

History:

Ray and Mary Ingwersen moved to Chehalis from California in the 1990s. They supported several local projects including the Chehalis Kiddie Spray Park, the indoor baseball practice facility, and the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library. They also helped launch the molecular genetics program at W.F. West High School. Their estate plan reflected their trust in the Chehalis Foundation’s leadership and their passion for education and innovation.

Ray passed away in 2008 and Mary in 2012.

Endowment Purpose:

To enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education programs at W.F. West High School, with additional support expanding into middle and elementary schools in Chehalis.

Legacy / Endowment Details

  • Established in 2013 with a $1.8 million estate gift
  • Provides ongoing financial support for STEM initiatives
  • Has enabled the purchase of advanced tools, such as a Scanning Electron Microscope
  • Supports programs like molecular genetics, app development, FIRST Robotics, and other high-level science courses
  • Helps Chehalis maintain one of the top STEM programs in the state

Eligibility Criteria

This endowment does not award scholarships to individuals. Funds are directed to school programs that:

  • Enhance STEM education opportunities
  • Support program expansion into earlier grade levels
  • Invest in tools and technology that promote hands-on learning

Selection Considerations

A subcommittee appointed by the Chehalis Foundation—consisting of Kevin Smith (Chair), Jim Lintott, school administrators, and three Foundation board members—oversees the use of funds based on educational impact and program needs.

Additional Notes

The endowment has allowed W.F. West High School to become a regional leader in STEM education. Chehalis is now one of the first districts in the county offering such advanced technology in high school classrooms, and STEM education is being introduced at younger grade levels to spark early interest.
