History:
Orin Smith, a W.F. West High School graduate (Class of 1960), was a highly respected business leader and philanthropist. After attending Centralia College, the University of Washington, and Harvard Business School, Orin built a successful career—eventually becoming the CEO and President of Starbucks Coffee Company. Under his leadership, Starbucks grew from 45 stores to more than 10,000 across 33 countries.
Though internationally known, Orin never forgot his roots in Chehalis. He gave generously to his hometown, supporting major projects such as the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library, the Gail and Carolyn Shaw Aquatics Center, and Centralia College. His legacy of generosity continues through the Orin Smith Family Foundation and its substantial support of local education and community development.
Endowment Purpose:
The Orin Smith Family Foundation created the Student Achievement Initiative (SAI) Endowment Fund to ensure the long-term success of education programs in Chehalis.
