Simpson, Larsen, Judd Band Scholarship

Ron Simpson, Tom Larsen, Dan Judd

History:

The Simpson, Larsen, Judd Band Scholarship was established to honor three exceptional music educators who shaped the music program at W.F. West High School. These individuals not only influenced thousands of students through their music education but also imparted life skills that go beyond the classroom, enriching students’ personal and professional lives.

Ron Simpson (1956–1982): Ron Simpson began teaching in Chehalis in 1956, where he became the head of the Music Department. Known for his musical talent and ability to listen and guide his students through personal challenges, Ron was an arranger and composer for the Concert Band and Small Ensembles. He passed away unexpectedly in 1982 just after retiring, leaving a lasting impact on his students and community.

Tom Larsen (1967–1997): Tom Larsen dedicated his entire 30-year teaching career to the Chehalis School District, primarily working with middle school bands, as well as high school and elementary bands. A passionate educator and district music coordinator for 18 years, Tom made a significant impact on the music offerings for all fifth-grade students in the district. He received numerous awards, including the Christa McAuliffe Washington State Teacher of the Year award and induction into the Washington Music Education Association’s Hall of Fame in 2008.

Dan Judd (1982–2006): Dan Judd led the W.F. West Band program for 24 years, achieving excellence in concert, jazz, and marching bands. Under his guidance, the bands earned many honors, including being selected to perform at the WA All-State Music Education convention and winning the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Upon retirement, Dan continued his impact as a band director at Summit High School in Oregon, where he earned seven state championships.
