Robert W. Close & Ruth M. Close Scholarship

Bob and Ruthie Close

History:

Bob Close dedicated 37 years to the Chehalis School District, serving as a high school history teacher, middle school principal, and assistant superintendent. Over the years, he was twice recognized for outstanding service by the Washington Association of School Administrators. Bob’s contributions extended beyond the classroom, as he played a pivotal role in the construction of two schools and worked with community members to establish student scholarships. He also mentored numerous staff and administrators throughout his career. Bob was a member of Chehalis Rotary and received multiple awards for his service.

Ruthie Close was equally dedicated to the Chehalis community, where she volunteered extensively in her children’s schools, including roles as a PTA member, Band Booster member, Athletic Booster Club member, and working on school levies. She was also a Blue Bird and Campfire leader and involved in church activities. In her professional career, Ruthie was a leader in the banking community and took pride in mentoring new staff.

Bob and Ruthie met in high school, married in 1958, and spent 37 years together in Chehalis. They both deeply valued education as a path for personal growth and breaking free from limitations. Their legacy continues through their children and grandchildren, who follow their Christian faith and pursuit of learning.
