History:
Laurie Merta attended W. F. West High School from 1971 to 1974, where she served as Junior Class President and participated in many activities. She later attended the University of Puget Sound, earning a degree in Psychology in 1978. After college, Laurie dedicated her career to public service, working as a Probation and Parole Officer in Pierce County before becoming the Director of Field Services for the American Federation of State Employees, a position she held for over 20 years.
Laurie passed away in June 2012, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, advocacy, and service. In recognition of her dedication, Washington State renamed the Shop Steward Award to the Laurie Merta Shop Steward of the Year Award in 2013, honoring her commitment to supporting and empowering others.
Scholarship Purpose:
The Laurie Merta Memorial Scholarship was established by the Merta family to support W. F. West High School graduates who embody Laurie’s values of leadership, determination, and service to others.
