Iron King Scholarship

In Memory of Shawn King

History:

Shawn King had dedicated 34 years to the metal trades industry. A 1983 W.F. West graduate, he earned an Associate in Technical Arts for welding from Centralia College in 1987. His career included roles as a foreman for Klein Bicycle Corporation, production manager for Kinesis USA Incorporated, and shop manager for Richmond Systems Incorporated. For 22 years, he worked as a welder for Bonneville Power while also running his highly regarded custom metal fabrication business, Iron King.

Beyond his professional success, Shawn had been a mentor and an inspiration to others in the industry and community. His investment in people and commitment to quality craftsmanship have made him a respected and admired figure in the field.

Scholarship Purpose:

The Iron King Scholarship recognizes students pursuing career pathways in welding and metals technology. This scholarship supports students who demonstrate technical proficiency, strong character, and a commitment to community service as they continue their education through college, trade programs, or apprenticeships.

Legacy / Endowment Details

All collected proceeds for this scholarship will be managed through the Chehalis Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Graduating senior from W.F. West High School
  • Must have earned a Certificate of Proficiency in Welding or Metals Technology
  • Must be pursuing post-secondary training in college, trade, or apprenticeship programs related to welding and metal fabrication
  • Must demonstrate strong community service involvement
  • Must have satisfactory school attendance and no high school disciplinary record

Selection Considerations

  • Recipients are selected by a review committee including:
    • Gavin King (Iron King)
    • Trevor Smith (Hitches & Things)
    • Todd Thornburg (W.F. West)
    • Chris Guenther (W.F. West)

If no applications meet expectations, the scholarship will not be awarded

Additional Notes

  • Scholarship amount: $2,000
  • Number of recipients: 2 annually
  • Recipients may reapply after graduation
